Helpful Tips For Avoiding Stoppages

No plumbing problem is more common and more frustrating than a clogged drain. Taking simple precautions and properly disposing of waste will keep drain clogs to a minimum.

• Never pour cooking oils and grease down the kitchen sink-use a tin can, allow it to solidify and dispose of in the trash.

• Do not put coffee grounds, cornhusks, potato peels or other fibrous and starchy foods in the garbage disposal.
• Clean floor drain strainers in tubs and showers and pop-up stoppers in sinks regularly to avoid washing clumps of hair, soap and lotion into the drain.
• Do not use your toilet as a wastebasket. Keep a wastebasket in the lavatory for the disposal of q-tips, dental floss, disposable diapers, feminine products, etc
• Do not leave small objects on the back of your toilet-they could fall in and cause a clog.
• Avoid chemical cleaners; particularly if you have brass, steel, or cast-iron traps and drainpipes; some caustic chemicals found in these types of cleaners can corrode metal pipes which will lead to larger problems.  Also, chemical drain cleaners are extremely dangerous products that can cause chemical burns to skin and permanent eye damage if not handled properly.
